Summer Internship in Conservation
Architectural Resources Group (ARG) is an award-winning interdisciplinary design firm comprised of architects, conservators, planners, and architectural historians. We work in a wide variety of sectors and building types, including hospitality, national and state parks, cultural and performing arts, higher education, multi-family, and civic projects. We design new buildings in sensitive historic and natural settings and work in the adaptive reuse and preservation of older ones. ARG is based on the San Francisco waterfront with branch offices in Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon.
ARG is seeking a talented, well-rounded conservation candidate for a summer internship in our San Francisco office. This is a full-time, in-person position with a salary of $25/hour.
Experience may include:
- Receive training in and perform field surveys and condition assessments
- Learn about historic building materials deterioration, investigation, and diagnosis
- Receive training in report preparation and assist with conditions documentation, conservation treatment plans, and repair and maintenance guidelines
- Learn about and perform historic finishes analysis, laboratory materials testing, and field mock-ups
- Assist with construction administration
- Receive building diagnostic tools and equipment training
The ideal candidate meets the following criteria:
- Earned or working towards an M.S. in Historic Preservation
- Strong written and communication skills; must submit at least one writing sample, which may include an undergraduate or graduate thesis or work produced in current coursework. Writing sample can be a research paper on an architectural topic, condition assessment, materials research and testing report, or local or national register nomination.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office. Knowledge of Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and Revit is a plus.
- Be a creative problem solver who enjoys working on a diverse range of exciting projects
Candidates must be a US citizen or hold a US visa. Exact dates of the internship will be coordinated based on the candidate’s summer schedule.
